Najib has been facing calls to resign, as well as criticism from within his own party, following a July report in US media suggesting that hundreds of millions of dollars in his accounts had been misappropriated from the troubled 1Malaysia Development Berhad.

Najib denied the allegations. The commission, which is under the prime minister’s office, said the money came from unnamed donors in the Middle East.

The motive for the donations has not been revealed.
